Check Out The Preschooler's Busy Book

The Preschooler's Busy Book Review

My son loves this book (as do I)! I am a stay-at-home mom, so we need to stay busy or I'll go crazy! We are able to pick this book up and quickly pick out an activity to do. The materials are basic materials that are easy enough to have on hand. We love arts and crafts, so I don't ever find us short of the necessary supplies. The age range on the book is very accurate. My 4 (almost 5) yo loves these activities.

The Preschooler's Busy Book Overview

The Preschooler’s Busy Book contains 365 fun, creative activities to stimulate your preschooler every day of the year! It also shows parents and daycare providers how to: save money by making paints, play dough, clays, glue, paste, and other arts and crafts supplies; prevent boredom during even the longest stretches of inclement weather with ideas for indoor play, kitchen activities, and arts and crafts projects; stimulate a child’s natural curiosity with fun reading, math, and science activities; encourage a child’s physical, mental, and emotional growth with ideas for music, dance, drama, and outdoor play; celebrate holidays and special occasions with projects and activities; and keep children occupied during long trips or cross-town errands. Disappointing - Christine - Austin, TX
I bought this book with the hopes of finding some quick and easy activities to keep my 3-year old occupied for longer bits of time. I have to admit, some of the activities in the book are perfect -- simple, engaging, without much prep. But about half of them are ridiculous. Either because they require too much prep time for a quick engagement or because they are simply ridiculous (almost obvious page fillers). About half of the activities are worth having printed. But then they could be organized better. In the book, they're organized topically (the "math" games are together, etc.). It would be better if they were organized more how one would use them. Categories like: quick prep, kitchen games, car games, etc. would be more helpful. Also, as a working mom who also wants to get creative with her kid, I found the book a bit offensive in that the prose was EXPLICITLY targeted for stay at home moms. There is simply no reason for this to be the case. It could just as easily be targeted for parents (moms AND dads, folks), and there's no reason for all of the language about staying home with your kids. Take for example the activity that asks you to guide your child in telling you all of the things he or she loves about dad, writing them down on a piece of paper, letting her decorate it, and then putting it in dad's lunch that he takes to work the next day. C'mon. This activity could just as easily have been written as "ask your child to pick an important person in his or her life (mom, dad, grandparent, neighbor, etc.) and write down all of the things she loves about that person. Have your child decorate the paper, and then the next time you see that person, have your child present the drawing as a gift.
