Romantic Prairie Style Review

Romantic Prairie Style Overview

Romantic Prairie Style embraces simple pleasures, comfort and the long-cherished ideals of natural beauty, simplicity and harmony with the earth. It's a style that says 'home' wherever you may be because, more than anything else, it's a mindset: gentle but strong, welcoming and lasting, durable yet sophisticated and, above all, real. Over the centuries, the humble dwellings built by European immigrants to the US in the 1880s have evolved into sturdier, more comfortable homes, which, depending on their geographic location, took on a variety of designs, be it a ranch, cabin, farmhouse, cottage or adobe. Each of these styles plays a role in prairie style and its enduring aura of romance and nostalgia. Here interiors bear the influence of European settlers and the poetry of the heart-warming authenticity of simple, natural textures, hand-hewn beams, bleached wood, weathered planks, woven blankets, cow-hide and Navajo rugs. It's a style inspired by the honesty of homespun materials of the past wedded to a flair for the present. It's flower-sprigged brocade, tawny leather, crisp eyelet and soft linen, corduroy with crochet trims, woolen plaids, cosy flannel and wispy organza. It's history retold and all about the enduring connection between people and places and the nostalgia we feel for a rural country life, a yearning for a simpler life, as embodied in Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie.

Feast: Food to Celebrate Life Review

Nigella is my original muse, she single handedly got me back into the kitchen and cooking when the days of making cookies with my grandmother passed and I had to start doing it on my own. I have all of her books and honestly they are something one can actually cook from, my shelves are bending from the amount of cookbooks they house but only half are being used to make dinners and cakes, others I look at for inspiration and for pictures but Nigella's recipes are worth every penny one spends on a cookbook. I can't express my love and gratitude for this woman; she's intelligent, cheerful, honest a magnificent food writer who actually got me into writing as well, I even got my first KitchenAid mixer because she used her so much to make all of her delectable treats. So fear not, this and other books that she penned are not only gorgeous to look at but they can help anyone put something mouth watering on the table in no time. This one has pictures on almost every page and a short little bit of how this came to be or how she eats it before each recipe, probably my favorite part of the book.

This book is broken into occasions rather than seasons or ingredients - Thanksgiving & Christmas, New Year, Meatless Feasts, Valentine's Day, Easter, Passover, Breakfast, Kitchen Feasts, Kiddiefeast, Cut-out Cookies, Chocolate Cake Hall of Fame, A Georgian Feast, Eid, Ultimate Feasts, Hallowe'en, Rosh Hashanah, A Venetian Feast, Festival of Lights, Partytime, Midnight Feast, Wedding Feast, Funeral Feast ( somber I know but the food is actually very appropriate and having herself lose her mother, sister and first husband to cancer, Nigella is still living life and making the best of what she has) so no matter what one celebrates they can find something good in this super large volume. I have to admit that I use this daily and don't wait for special occasions.

Feast is probably her biggest ( thickest) book to date, and I made some good things from it. Let me tell you, the Pumpkin Cheesecake (on page 68 ) was my first cheesecake and no only was it ridiculously easy it turned out so good I was shocked I made it myself. There was a suggestion for Butterscotch sauce on the page to pour on top, I made it as well ( gotta love the pairing suggestions) and the combination was just divine. The sauce would also go well on something like an apple and macadamia nut crumble or anything thatis sweet.

Gingerbread muffins on page 91 were so warm and cozy I make them in cold weather to keep the chill of, the trouble is stopping at one. If you want your house to smell like a home, make this!

Roast Loin of pork with caraway, lemon and garlic - spicy fragrant, nothing ordinary about this simple to make dinner, makes great leftovers as the rub on top intensifies.

Chicken Pot Pie - I guarantee that after this one no one will be shopping for it in the frozen section of their supermarket, flaky dough, creamy hot center, lost of peas, ham and chicken in sauce, the only caution is not burning the tongue as it's hard not to gobble up.

There's even Muttar Paneer - an excellent Indian dish, makes me feel silly for ever thinking it was hard to make. Now I can control the ingredients and how much salt and fat goes into it, one can make a healthy lunch out of an exotic staple after all.

This book has everything, I don't know how this woman thinks it all up, but she makes these recipes and writes about them, she feeds them to her children and friends, real people are involved into bringing this book to life and it shows.

- Kasia S.

Feast: Food to Celebrate Life Overview

Nigella Lawson, Gourmet magazine's "It Girl," New York Times "Dining In" columnist, and bestselling cookbook author, is celebrating life -- and you're invited. Feast, Nigella's most festive book yet, offers savory, spicy, and delicious recipes for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah, Eid, New Year's, Passover, Easter gatherings, and any time you want to celebrate food and life. This book is filled with festive recipes, and in it, Nigella offers tips, tricks, and shortcuts that will ensure you dine with ease, style, and fun. Feast also includes some surprising gems, like Nigella's Chocolate Cake Hall of Fame, and her best cheeseburger. And like her other cookbooks, Feast is a cookbook that will be treasured all year long.

Feast: Food to Celebrate Life Specifications

If you consider eating with friends and family a joyful, indulgent celebration chances are you love a good feast. And who better to carefully guide you through the daunting task of preparing that Feast than the domestic goddess herself Nigella Lawson. Written in the tradition of Nigella Bites and How to Eat, Feast is a cookbook for the sensualist that wants to eat very well, but also wants to spend time enjoying the company of their guests instead of struggling with the creation of the meal. What sets Lawson apart is not that she's a good cookbook writer, but a strong writer period. Similar to her other books, Nigella's Feast is presented as part personal memoir, part educational, and part recipe presentation. There is a nice blend of occasions including the obvious (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, and Easter), a few culturally specific ones (Rosh Hashanah, Georgian Feast, and Venetian Feast), feasts for kids, for vegetarians, and an elegant cocktail party. Each chapter begins with an overview of that particular "Feast." Generally, there is a personal story and experience told, an overview of the cultural importance of the feast, and a description of foods that are associated with each occasion. Impressively, every recipe begins with a personal anecdote giving that impression Nigella didn't just throw it in the book, but is experienced with the recipe and has used it with success. Take her twist on the decadent Chocolate Guinness Cake for example: "I wanted to make a cream cheese frosting to echo the pale head that sits on top of a glass of stout. It's unconventional to add cream but it makes it frothier and lighter which I regard as aesthetically and gastronomically desirable." Who can argue? The cake is to die for. So next time you need to prepare a dinner party let the goddess be your guide, and remember: Keep the preparation simple, use easily available ingredients, and take time to enjoy your guests and your meal. Feast may not be the most advanced cookbook you will own, but if you want to create excellent food with relative ease in a short amount of time, you can not beat Nigella. --Rob Bracco

That is what my friend said as he glanced at the TV and saw Nigella for the first time. And we tried her recipes together. They were a hit!

An intriguing idea...with room for improvement - J. Burhans - Monument, CO USA
This is more than a sample, yet less than the full book which isn't available on Kindle. This "selection" says it iss 98 pages which doesn't mean much on a Kindle. It has a maximum location of 2476 compare with 143 in the sample of the selection. That said, if you like reading Nigella, this is a nice sampler with a few recipes for the Holidays. The table of contents is skimpy on the link, but its easy to search for anything on the Kindle (though I wish you could do it for only the current book) and you can add your own notes and bookmarks to mark specific recipes. A recipe list with links would be nice. But, for a cookbook, often it is key to see a picture of the finished result (in color is best) so you know what you are shooting for and that is lacking as you'd expect on the Kindle. For somethings, the grainy black and white images would do (like in the newspapers) or black line drawings (like comics) but for food you want color. Some day we may get that on a next gen Kindle. For now, this is an intriguing idea...was worth the low price.

save your money - Cricket -
the index is so poorly designed that you have to manually page to find out what recipes are included and their location. who has that time when they want to look something up......

MAGGIE: the dog who changed my life:A Story of Love Review

I finished Maggie's story a few weeks ago. I to have a black lab which I just love to death and is my best friend. The way Dawn describes her relationship with Maggie is so touching and true to life that I still think of stories that she tells whenever I look at my Tallie "Dega". I would recommend this book to any dog (or animal) lover that wants to read about how a true human and animal relationship can happen. It just broke my heart as I got to the sad part of the story. (I actually finished it in Taco Bell, crying at the table by myself). I give Dawn a "hug" for being able to put her thoughts and feelings into words about this wonderful animal who I'm sure is missed every day. Dawn should be very proud of the story she has shared and for the dog that she had.

MAGGIE: the dog who changed my life:A Story of Love Overview

The connection between dog and owner can be powerful. In Maggie: The Dog Who Changed My Life, Dawn Kairns discovered how a dog's unique and beautiful essence could open her heart and change her life. Her experience with Maggie created her belief that dogs are intelligent and emotional beings that can sense human thoughts.

From housebreaking to adolescent escapades and on through old age, Maggie's radiant and genuine spirit became interwoven with the fabric of Ms. Kairns' life. Through their journey together, Dawn Kairns experiences the joys of sharing life with a dog that so touched others as well as the profound grief that comes with the loss of her beloved Maggie.

A real disappointment - Donna Frank -
You would think this is a book about a dog but that is only a small part of this book which the author used as a platform to whine about her step children. This was a real waste of my money. Had several grammatical and spelling errors as well.

Wonderful Story About Life with a Beautiful Dog - Chryss -
Maggie is a dog who seems to know the author inside and out. She writes about caring for Maggie through health issues, picking out foods and many things that come with having dogs as our companions. The author is really points out how dogs are living, breathing, emotional beings, who are here in our lives for a reason. She does a magnificent job with this book. I have given this book as a gift to multiple people. It is a treasure for those who have had or have their soul dogs.

Lessons in Life - David Elm -
Wonderfully written from your heart. You have clearly articulated something that we all need lessons in:
1) to learn HOW to listen to ourselves, and then
2) to learn TO listen to ourselves.
MAGGIE was a great story and a valuable lesson to impart. Thanks.

Heartwarming - wiedenutt -
MAGGIE: the dog who changed my life: A Story of Love is a wonderful, heartwarming story of how much our animals influence and impact our lives, even after they're gone. Dawn Kairns' poignant description of her deep & close relationship with Maggie is a most enjoyable & uplifting read.

Teh Itteh Bitteh Book of Kittehs Overview

The authors of I Can Has Cheezburger? return with an awww- inspiring threequel in their blockbuster LOLcat series.

The Web site icanhascheezburger.com, the Internet's depot for LOLcat pictures, has already spawned two New York Times bestsellers: I Can Has Cheezburger? and How to Take Over teh Wurld. Now the mad geniuses behind the site have pored over their copious archive of cat photos with misspelled captions to bring fans a collection that raises the bar for cuteness.

While the first book explained the LOLcat philosophy, the second helped readers live these tenets themselves. With Teh Itteh Bitteh Book of Kittehs, the focus is now on the cutest cat of all: tiny, heartwarming, adorable kittens. The result is page after page of uber- cuteness that will charm anyone who loves kitties (and those who just love to laugh at these frisky bundles of fur).

If you like the first two books, and if you like to visit the website everyday for new lolcats, then this book is a disappointment. The choices made for this book are way to much "save". I did not laugh with more than two or three lolcats in this book. The phrases many times have nothing to do with the photo. Next time please release a book with just the top rated lolcats from the site. I'm still waiting for them to release a day-to-day calender with the best rated lolcats from their website.

Build Your Own Earth Oven: A Low-Cost, Wood-Fired Mud Oven; Simple Sourdough Bread; Perfect Loaves Review

This book is an excellent guide on the path to creating your own oven. If you are looking for detailed plans to follow step-by-step, this book will be helpful, but will likely disappoint. If instead, you approach building your oven as you do (or should) approach making bread...as a process instead of a procedure, you will be greatly rewarded. The author provides ample options, details, and examples to allow you to start on your journey, with an emphasis on experimenting and sourcing local materials.

After a few nights spent reading this book, I managed to successfully build a simple test oven in about 4 hours of actual work time (5-1/2 hours total, which includes digging the clay out of the yard, picking the kids up from school, and sipping some wine once complete while the kids decorated!). The oven physically turned out great, was easy to build, and I have learned much from the experience. Now I am eagerly waiting for everything to dry out enough to successfully bake pizza (the April showers may be good for the garden, but haven't been helping my mud oven dry out!).

As the author says: Experiment! There is plenty of information to allow you to confidently get your hands dirty building a few simple ovens with minimal time and monetary investment (I spent ~ on a fire-brick floor, and another on cement blocks so I wouldn't have to move rock for the foundation). The major investment in these ovens is the time (labor) spent in construction, which is time well spent. The afternoon I spent building my first oven is chalked up to experience (you cannot truly appreciate building with earth until you've squished it between your fingers and toes!), family time (my six year old twins had a *GREAT* time helping me play in the mud!), and actual productivity (I did manage to build a complete oven from start to finish in an afternoon).

I encourage everyone to re-connect with the earth in a way most of us haven't since we were children and thought splashing in mud-puddles was fun...get this book, dig some dirt, get your hands dirty, and build something!

If your interests extend beyond ovens, you might also want to pick up the excellent Building With Cob: A Step-by-step Guide by Adam Weismann & Katy Bryce.

Build Your Own Earth Oven: A Low-Cost, Wood-Fired Mud Oven; Simple Sourdough Bread; Perfect Loaves Overview

Build Your Own Earth Oven is a fully-illustrated handbook for making a simple, wood-fired, masonry-style oven. It provides clear, step-by-step instructions for building and firing the oven, as well as complete directions for making sourdough bread in the best (and simplest) artisan tradition.

Earth ovens are as simple as a southwestern horno or European bee-hive oven and every bit as effective as a fancy brick hearth or modern, steam-injected commercial oven. The dense, three-to-twelve inch thick earthen walls store the heat of the fire; after the hot coals are removed, the hot walls radiate a steady, intense heat for hours. The resulting steamy environment is essential for the crisp, flavorful crusts of true hearth loaves, and you can easily build it for less than the price of a couple of fancy dough-rising baskets!

If you like to cook outdoors, an earth oven can also transform fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs into delicious pies, pizzas, and other creations (one of my favorites is fresh vegetables, herbs, and potatoes drizzled with olive oil). Pizza cooks to perfection in three minutes, and you can even use the residual heat to dry your surplus garden produce, and incubate your home-made yogurt!

Building with earth is safe, easy, inexpensive, and extraordinarily effective. Good building soil is usually right under your feet! Many will find it in their back yards. Use it plain, or mixed with sand and straw. Build the simplest oven in a day! Adding a roof and foundation makes it permanent. The simple, round shape makes a beautiful garden sculpture, or can be sculpted into a fire-breathing dragon!

It is a project that appeals to bakers, builders, and beginners of all kinds:

The serious or aspiring baker who wants the best lo-cost oven for their bread;

Gardeners and outdoor cooks who want a centerpiece for a beautiful outdoor kitchen;

People interested in creative uses of low-cost materials and simple technologies; and

Teachers who want a multi-faceted, experiential learning experience for their students (the book has been successful with everyone from third-graders to adults).

Illustrated by the author with over a hundred drawings and photos, it includes color pictures of sculpted ovens and their builders, as well as further references on food, baking, and building.

Material is generally good... - Michael P. Stueber -
But the editing stinks. I know some people think this is nitpicking, but it's distracting and undermines the reader's faith in the material and enjoyment of reading to regularly see what look like OCR errors (like an exclamation point in place of a lowercase L in the middle of a word) throughout the book. That might just be enough to knock off a star, but it's much worse: I noticed two places where a column break obviously cut off some amount of text. How much? Who knows? It could be a sentence, or it could be ten paragraphs.

Many of the articles are quite good, and they're well chosen: there are articles on all different kinds of hunting, shooting, and collecting topics, and they were good enough to keep my interest even where I had no particular interest in the subject. For the most part, it's just a fun book to sit down and kill an evening with. But the pervasive evidence that nobody cared enough to read the text after it was pasted into the print file definitely hurts the experience.

Great Articles, But Short on Semi-Auto Listings - Keith Out West -
Gun Digest is legendary for its Reports From The Field articles. This year's edition does not disappoint in that regard. Also included are a wealth of handy ballistics charts. I did find, however, that the section of listings for semi-auto rifles was very sparse -- nowhere near a comprehensive listing of what's out there on the market. If you buy the Gun Digest to do some armchair shopping for semi-auto rifles, you'll most likely be disappointed. Too bad. If the author was to beef up the firearm listings, Gun Digest could be quite the definitive, comprehensive digest that it comes close to being.

Dewey: The Small-town Library-cat Who Touched the World Review

I just finished the book and I am not ashamed to tell you my eyes are wet. I understand some people just want to read about Dewey but nothing else. I do understand how Dewey had reminded people of changes. Dewey offered his unconditional love everyday. Everyone was happy with Dewey and it could be a perfect ending of a fairy tale. Things change and people get old. Dewey got old and passed away. My beloved cat recently just died. He had given me so much.
The book is about love, changes and life. Life goes on with or without you. However, pay attention to every kindness in the world.
I hope the story of Dewey will make people realize how important it is to treat our pets right. They are family. They are not disposable just because you have to move or just had a baby.

Dewey: The Small-town Library-cat Who Touched the World Overview

On the coldest morning of the year, Vicki Myron found a tiny, bedraggled kitten almost frozen to death in the night drop box of the library where she worked, and her life -- and the town of Spencer, Iowa -- would never be the same.Vicki was a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm and an alcoholic, abusive husband. But her biggest challenge as the new head librarian in Spencer was to raise the spirits of a small, out-of-the-way town mired deep in the farm crisis of the 1980s.Dewey, as the townspeople named the kitten, quickly grew into a strutting, adorable library cat whose antics kept patrons in stitches, and whose sixth sense about those in need created hundreds of deep and loving friendships. As his fame grew, people drove hundreds of miles to meet Dewey, and people all over the world fell in love with him.Through it all, Dewey remained a loyal companion, a beacon of hope not just for Vicki, but for the entire town of Spencer as it slowly, steadily pulled itself up from the worst financial crisis in its long history. Dewey won hearts and proved to everyone he encountered that unconditional love comes in many forms.

Cats are loveable - Gmajoan -

Having had a cat called 'Dewey back in the 1980' in New Zealand I was intrigued to read this book. It is a delighful story and if you dont like cats, after reading this book, You Will.
Our Dewey was one of four kittens that we got from a friend, they were all pure white with blue eyes. Each kitten was for each of our four children.
The kittens were called Liley,Louie,Dewey and Monty.
We loved them and enjoyed them very much.
Cats are a good and faithful friend.

DEWEY the library cat - Cougar -
What a great true story to read, especially for the cat lover in you. It also makes a great gift for that someone you don't know what to buy for. It has a great story that grabs you right from the first page.
Dewey is well worth the money. You won't want to give this book away.
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

Warms your heart - Erin -
I loved this book. I'm not an avid reader of non-fiction, so when I decided to read "Dewey" I was a little skeptical. It already had two things going for it though: I love cats and my grandfather lived in Spencer, IA, so I visited there often.

It doesn't matter if you love cats or not, this book will warm your soul. Our feline friends are so much more than window seat warmers. They have a unique personality and Dewey's story is told in a way that makes us feel like he is OUR cat.

May the memory of Dewey live on.

The Earring Style Book: Making Designer Earrings, Capturing Celebrity Style, and Getting the Look for Less Review

I have a ton of jewelry design books and magazines. This one is one of my favorites. I have been beading for about 5 years and am primarily a bead stringer. I dabble in wirework, but I am not very good. Having said that, this book is all about making earrings with wire, chains and beads. It explains the design techniques so well, that I was able to make several pairs of earrings from this book within the first 24 hours of receiving it. I don't remember the last time I had a jewelry design book and needed to make the projects right away. I have made about 5 so far, and am planning on trying about 20 + more when I find the time. I actually went out and bought more wire to make the earrings in this book. It is amazing, and I highly recommend to anyone.

The best book on making earrings! - FashionLove - White Plains, NY
I was looking forward to this book for a while, but wasn't sure what to expect. Most jewelry books are for beginners (I'm an experienced wire wrapper) and I never find anything that I would want to make for myself. So, when I picked this book up, I was in AWE because it was amazing. The projects were unbelievably gorgeous and I actually learned something new! The author mentions many celebrities (all earrings have celebrity names (for example, Gwyneth, Ellen, Reese, etc.)) and I loved that! So, if you like modern designs and want to know what celebrities wear right now, pick this book up. You won't regret it!

The Power of Positive Dog Training Review

with two very rambunctious border collie puppies any advice was good advice. or so i thought until i read pat millers' positive dog training book. she doesn't preach but gently guides newcomer puppy owners. her book is full of encouragement and practical training tips to help ease the daily frustrations and defeats faced when dealing with two highly intelligent and at times challenging puppies. I highly recommend this book for not only reassuring new dog owners but also in helping to reinforce that behavioural change can occur without cruelty but with lots of love and kindness.
well done pat!

BASIC CLICKER TRAINING TECHNIQUES - KAAREN REICHE - NORTH BEND OR
I am planning to adopt a puppy soon. Having never had a dog I know I'm going to need help with training. I'm planning to take my puppy to training classes but feel I should prepare myself prior to getting the puppy. This book does this. It's well written by a professional dog trainer. It is a reward system utilizing a "clicker." It covers everything, including dreaded potty training. I'm going to use it for planning and as a reference. As the author says it's easier to train the dog right the first time rather than trying to delete an unwanted behavior.

Basically Let's Just Give All Dogs Treats Just For Being Alive!!! - Zedicus - New York, USA
Any moron can bribe a dog with treats constantly and call it dog training. Your dog should listen because you said so. He needs to respond because of your love, technique and proper knowledge, not hot dogs, cheese, beggin strips or salami. Where is your common sense you guys?

Also, it's best to use treats for obedience competitions or if you are dealing with an extremely fearful dog. Is that really you?!?! Is your dog that afraid of you that the minute he sees you, he pees himself or is nowhere to be found? I seriously doubt it.

Again, you can bribe your dog yourself. You don't need to read this book or even work with some cookie trainer. Here's how I will make you think twice. Would you call this method practical, smart or even natural?

Reality Check: Give your dog treats, but at the very "end" of your training sessions and once in a while. If your dog sees or even smells the treats in your hands, sorry, you are relying on treats instead of your bond, love and your leadership. If you honestly think that dogs love to please, you wouldn't need to use a milk bone every single time.

Face it. It doesn't take much skill or talent to give a dog treats for everything. We didn't teach our kids this way. Did you learn your ABC's with Twinkies and Kit Kats? I hope not.

Conclusion: This positive reinforcement got me negative outcome. A fat dog with explosive diarrhea that licks his mouth and looks in my hand every time I ask him to sit. Kudos to the author.

Great training book! - greenshutters - San Francisco
I've read many training books and used many training techniques, and I recommend this one because of its emotional approach. It gets you to think like your dog instead of getting frustrated figuring out what your dog is trying to do - very helpful and different than other books (if you like Cesar Millan you will like this one). And it's a great read!

The Gourmet Cookie Book: The Single Best Recipe from Each Year 1941-2009 Overview

For this stunning collection, the editors of Gourmet delved deep into their archives and selected the most delicious cookie for each year of the magazine’s sixty-eight-year existence. After marathon testing sessions and winnowing from thousands of recipes—many sent in by readers—they chose an amazing array, from the almond-scented French-style Cajun Macaroons, from the magazine’s beginnings in 1941, through Mocha Toffee Bars (1971), to the contemporary Glittering Lemon Sandwich Cookies. The enticing assortment includes

Cookies of every type and description, from the homey (Aunt Sis’s Strawberry Tart Cookies) to the exotic (Grand Marnier-Glazed Pain d’Epice Cookies), including balls, bars, refrigerator cookies, drop cookies, even deep-fried cookie confections.

Cookies from around the world: from Dutch Jan Hagels to Irish oatmeal sandwich cookies filled with cream and Irish whiskey, to Scandinavian Rosettes.
