Martha Stewart's Cooking School: Lessons and Recipes for the Home Cook Review

This book is truly amazing. I found it in a small warehouse type store by my home, peered through it, then jumped at buying it. I was not passing this up... I am a beginner cook. I know relatively nothing, beyond my spanish seasonings, on how to make food. Different foods. And I am intimidated by the kitchen. Aside from that, my interest of the science of cooking has been peeked, through the numerous books that my mother and I have purchased, mostly she (i'm not the cook). Whether it be cooking, baking and/or decorating/displaying foods. It has all grown so interesting to me.

To the book... Martha Stewart has created a book filled with step by step pictures of all of the recipes presented here, for those of us who like reading. And her explanations and definitions are so clear and comforting, you can not help but want to get in the kitchen and whip up a Martha Stewart dinner. I have never been a fan of these celebrity cooks or cookbooks, but with Ms. Stewarts books there seems to be a pattern, one of a teacher. For example, pictures + clear instructions and definitions of terms (domestic and foreign) of everything, cooking instruments and food, equaling a no fail and safe environment in the kitchen. For those learning to cook and those who do not have the privelage of Parent as Teacher model, this book is definately worth the time and effort, which is not much. Martha makes it all so simple. Now I know what other chefs are speaking about in my other cookbooks. If not, I will always refer back to Martha Stewarts Cooking School. I highy praise and reccommend this book.

Martha Stewart's Prime Rib Roast

Prime rib, or standing rib roast, has long been a mainstay at the holiday table (where it is often paired with Yorkshire pudding, a British specialty made from the pan juices and a simple batter of flour, eggs, and milk). As it is expensive, prime rib should be handled with extra care. It is imperative that you have an instant-read thermometer for determining the internal temperature; if allowed to cook too long, the meat will no longer be a rosy pink inside, the optimal color for any high-quality roast. Remove the roast when still rare, as it will continue to cook as it rests, rising as much as 10 degrees in 20 minutes.

Rubbing meat (as well as chicken and fish) with herbs, spices, and a bit of oil will add tremendous flavor. Here, the beef is coated with a mixture of bay leaves, sage, and orange zest, all familiar holiday flavors. Allowing the meat to "marinate" in the rub overnight deepens the flavor even more. A similar result is achieved by simply salting the meat a day or two before roasting, whereby the salt will have penetrated the meat much like a brining solution.

Larger roasts such as prime rib, crown roast, and a whole turkey are started at a high temperature (450-degrees F) to sear the meat, then the temperature is lowered after 30 minutes to prevent the outside from burning before the meat is cooked through. The exterior won't develop a crust right away, but the initial high heat gives the outside a head start so that it will be perfectly browned in the end. --Martha Stewart

Prime Rib Roast

For Rub

15 dried bay leaves, crumbled
1/3 cup coarsely chopped fresh sage leaves, plus several whole leaves for garnish
1/2 cup extra--virgin olive oil
coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
1/3 cup finely grated orange zest (from 2 to 3 oranges)

For Roast
1 three-rib prime rib of beef (about 7 pounds), trimmed and frenched

Prepare Meat

Stir together crumbled bay leaves, sage, the oil, 1½ teaspoons salt, and the orange zest in a small bowl. Season with pepper. Rub herb mixture all over the beef, coating evenly. Refrigerate overnight, covered. About 2 hours before you plan to cook the beef, remove it from the refrigerator. Place beef, fat side up, in a roasting pan and allow it to come to room temperature. Meanwhile, heat the oven to 450-degrees F.

Roast

Cook beef for 30 minutes, then reduce temperature to 350-degrees F and continue roasting until an instant-read thermometer inserted into meat (away from bone) registers 115-degrees F to 120-degrees F (for rare), about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes longer. Let rest 20 minutes.

Carve and Serve

Slice meat away from ribs, cutting along the bones. Then, slice meat crosswise to desired thickness. Serve, garnished with whole sage leaves.

a little disappointed - NAE -
I was a little bit disappointed with this cookbook. I had wanted to get it for so long that I just caved. I consider myself a beginner to intermiediate cook but there were a lot of techniques and recipes that a beginner would be intimidated by. I expected to see things like homemade meatballs and bread and all the tips and techinques that go along with it. Instead of that there were recipes for things like duck and rabbit and caviar topped egg cups. I don't even think there is a place anywhere near me that sells caviar let alone duck. However, there are a few recipes I would like to try such as homemade angel food cake. Another thing I liked about the book is how it discribed the herbs and what they worked best with and what they tasted like. If I could do it all over again. I would have checked it out from a library instead of buying it.

Art Forms in Nature: The Prints of Ernst Haeckel (Monographs) Review

What can I say. The illustrations are amazing, the subject matter is gorgeous, and the illustrator is from a generation of gentlemen (and occasionally, back then, gentlewomen) that made wonderfully detailed artworks as scientists, or as they used to call them, natural philosophers.

If you are curious, and tend toward the psychedelic, the complex, the ramified, and the 'Tiffany-twisted', you will be very happy looking at the pages of this text. If you are an artist of any kind, this book may inspire you. Breathe, nay, suck it in. You won't be disappointed.

However, if you think that 'art' is just a decorative discipline, or that art is something that should always be narrowly 'pretty', you may wish to look elsewhere. There's plenty of pretty here, but some of it is downright biologically-ugly, and by that, I mean gorgeous to me.

Sometimes ugly is pretty. Biology is refined, and crude. Sophisticated, and blunt. Space-age, and extinct. And so on... We will be searching, as natural philosophers, through all that biology has to tell us, long after any of us are dead, to find beauty and ugliness. Waste, rot, carnage. Sustainability, health, wealth, welfare, agreement. And enjoyment.

'nuff said.

Art Forms in Nature: The Prints of Ernst Haeckel (Monographs) Overview

The geometric shapes and natural forms, captured with exceptional precision in Ernst Haeckel's prints, still influence artists and designers to this day. This volume highlights the research and findings of this natural scientist. Powerful modern microscopes have confirmed the accuracy of Haeckel's prints, which even in their day, became world famous. Haeckel's portfolio, first published between 1899 and 1904 in separate installments, is described in the opening essays. The plates illustrate Haeckel's fundamental monistic notion of the "unity of all living things" and the wide variety of forms are executed with utmost delicacy. Incipient microscopic organisms are juxtaposed with highly developed plants and animals. The pages, ordered according to geometric and "constructive" aspects, document the oness of the world in its most diversified forms. This collection of plates was not only well-received by scientists, but by artists and architects as well. Rene Binet, a pioneer of glass and iron constructions, Emile Galle, a renowned Art Nouveau designer, and the photographer Karl Blossfeld all make explicit reference to Haeckel in their work.

Art Forms in Nature: The Prints of Ernst Haeckel (Monographs) Specifications

Every biology student knows Ernst Haeckel as the originator of the "Biogenetic Law": ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny. Haeckel was a passionate student of the evolutionary shaping of biological forms, and Art Forms in Nature captures both his artistic sensibility and the scientific rigor he applied to all his studies. First published in 1904, Art Forms in Nature is a glorification of function and form, a demonstration of organic symmetry that has nothing--and everything--to do with nature as it actually exists. Each plate exhibits organisms carefully arranged and exquisitely detailed, "a symbiosis between decorative sketches and descriptive observations of nature," as Olaf Breidbach states in his fascinating introductory text. The radiolarians, medusae, rotifers, bryozoans, and even frogs and turtles lovingly recreated here are gorgeous and self-explanatory, rendered in delicate, filigreed lines, and colored gently with muted green, delicate pink, and sepia. Art students will appreciate the designs found in nature--scientists will love the evolutionary statement of form inherent in the beauty. --Therese Littleton

A collection from a 19th century master. - PaxSix - Queensland, Australia
Ernst Haeckel's illustrations are the epitome of 19th century scientific drawing. The drawings are meticulously detailed and show of the symmetry and geometry of natural forms. The plates of large organisms such as reptiles have a quaint, old-fashioned look, often bordering on ugly - yet interesting! The bulk of my affections goes to the plates of radiolarians and other symmetrical microorganisms: here Haeckel is in his element, revealing the geometric beauty of organisms that we rarely see in life as they are too small or live underwater. They are inspiring for designing patterns and scuptural forms: get this book if you are interested in biology, art history or design!

The plates are well printed, reproducing colour and detail well, while the size is big enough to see the details clearly, while small enough to have a book that can be handled and browsed comfortably.

Stunning...would give million stars to it! - Gaika - The Netherlands
Just got this book today in mail and it is mindblowing. Before ordering i looked through the reviews and the video review which helped me a lot. And the book is just that - stunningly beautiful. I have been flipping through the pages but to really go through it will take a long time because the body of work is enormous, so many details in the drawings....aah and the compositions....wow.... To me looking through this book is like meditation!
whoever gives this book less than 5 stars does not know what they wanted out of the book in the first place.

a wonderful book - flora - BeiJing China

The Portrait of a Lady [Volume 2] Review

The Portrait of a Lady [Volume 2] Overview

The Portrait of a Lady

by Henry James

VOLUME II

CHAPTER XXVIII

On the morrow, in the evening, Lord Warburton went again to see
his friends at their hotel, and at this establishment he learned
that they had gone to the opera. He drove to the opera with the
idea of paying them a visit in their box after the easy Italian
fashion; and when he had obtained his admittance--it was one of
the secondary theatres--looked about the large, bare, ill-lighted
house. An act had just terminated and he was at liberty to pursue
his quest. After scanning two or three tiers of boxes he
perceived in one of the largest of these receptacles a lady whom
he easily recognised. Miss Archer was seated facing the stage and
partly screened by the curtain of the box; and beside her,
leaning back in his chair, was Mr. Gilbert Osmond. They appeared
to have the place to themselves, and Warburton supposed their
companions had taken advantage of the recess to enjoy the
relative coolness of the lobby. He stood a while with his eyes on
the interesting pair; he asked himself if he should go up and
interrupt the harmony. At last he judged that Isabel had seen
him, and this accident determined him. There should be no marked
holding off. He took his way to the upper regions and on the
staircase met Ralph Touchett slowly descending, his hat at the
inclination of ennui and his hands where they usually were.

"I saw you below a moment since and was going down to you. I feel
lonely and want company," was Ralph's greeting.

"You've some that's very good which you've yet deserted."

"Do you mean my cousin? Oh, she has a visitor and doesn't want
me. Then Miss Stackpole and Bantling have gone out to a cafe to
eat an ice--Miss Stackpole delights in an ice. I didn't think
they wanted me either. The opera's very bad; the women look like
laundresses and sing like peacocks. I feel very low."

"You had better go home," Lord Warburton said without
affectation.

"And leave my young lady in this sad place? Ah no, I must watch
over her."

"She seems to have plenty of friends."

"Yes, that's why I must watch," said Ralph with the same large
mock-melancholy.

"If she doesn't want you it's probable she doesn't want me."

"No, you're different. Go to the box and stay there while I walk
about."

Lord Warburton went to the box, where Isabel's welcome was as to
a friend so honourably old that he vaguely asked himself what
queer temporal province she was annexing. He exchanged greetings
with Mr. Osmond, to whom he had been introduced the day before
and who, after he came in, sat blandly apart and silent, as if
repudiating competence in the subjects of allusion now probable.
It struck her second visitor that Miss Archer had, in operatic
conditions, a radiance, even a slight exaltation; as she was,
however, at all times a keenly-glancing, quickly-moving,
completely animated young woman, he may have been mistaken on
this point. Her talk with him moreover pointed to presence of
mind; it expressed a kindness so ingenious and deliberate as to
indicate that she was in undisturbed possession of her faculties.
Poor Lord Warburton had moments of bewilderment. She had
discouraged him, formally, as much as a woman could; what
business had she then with such arts and such felicities, above
all with such tones of reparation--preparation? Her voice had
tricks of sweetness, but why play them on HIM? The others came
back; the bare, familiar, trivial opera began again. The box was
large, and there was room for him to remain if he would sit a
little behind and in the dark. He did so for half an hour, while
Mr. Osmond remained in front, leaning forward, his elbows on his
knees, just behind Isabel. Lord Warburton heard nothing, and from
his gloomy corner saw nothing but the clear profile of this young
lady defined against the dim illumination of the house. When
there was another interval no one moved. Mr. Osmond talked to
Isabel, and Lord Warburton kept his corner. He did so but for a
short time,

Essays, First Series Review

Ralph Waldo Emerson is America's greatest essayist and one of its greatest orators. To call him an essayist indeed sells him rather short and is very misleading. Most think of essays as interminable, dry, and academic, full of jargon, polysyllables, and other esoterica making them near-inaccessible to general readers. Emerson is very different. His writing is vibrant and vital, making subjects come alive in a way that is as accessible as it is thought-provoking. He writes about general topics - self-reliance, history, love, friendship - of fundamental importance to humanity but is never pretentious, portentous, or arcane; his writing is indeed so strong and lively that it can be read as literature - or even entertainment. Emerson was most famous in life for oratory and is now best-known for essays but had a poet's soul in the truest sense; he wrote many poems, but a poetic sensibility underlies all his writings. His essays are sculpted with poetic precision; he is admirably concise and knows just what words to use to get attention and desired effect, not needing more. Perhaps more importantly, his style is as close to poetry as prose can be, full of beautiful descriptions, exciting metaphors, and general lushness. Yet he was also a philosopher, conveying classic philosophy in easily relatable form with new relevance and contributing much of his own. Only Plato himself rivals Emerson for combining poetry and philosophy's unique strengths; his essays are strong on all fronts.

Emerson now unfortunately and unfairly has a reputation as a difficult, somewhat antiquated read in many minds. This is a travesty, as very few classic writers are as relevant and accessible. Hard as it may be to conceive, Emerson was seen in life as a popularizer; he wrote for regular people, conveying intellectual material in terms they could easily understand, relate to, appreciate - and, above all, act on. Though one of the most well-educated, well-read, and well-traveled people of his day, he had the rare gift of translating weighty issues to the masses without losing intellectual vigor. Thus, though widely and greatly admired by artists and intellectuals, he was often looked down on by the high-brow. Time has erased this injustice, meaning Emerson can now be enjoyed by all.

It is hard to classify Emerson's essays; he wrote on nearly every conceivable subject: philosophy, psychology, history, literary criticism, ethics, politics, and many, many others. However, his overriding concern at all times was to make his subjects not only accessible but in the most fundamental way relatable. His work was essentially a call to action meant to wake people up from intellectual stupor, apathy, narrow-mindedness, and pre-conceptions. He wanted to take people's intellectual virginity, forcing them to see the truth of Socrates' belief that an unexamined belief is not worth living. No cow was too sacred for him to kick, which led to considerable controversy; he was famously banned from Harvard Divinity School, his alma mater, for decades only to be welcomed back enthusiastically late in life when the school had adopted nearly all the stances it originally condemned as blasphemous. Emerson knew people were held back by inherited inhibitions of all sorts - often without even realizing it - and wanted them swept away so all could reach full potential. On top of everything else, his work is thus the best kind of self-help manual; few writers are as inspirational and fundamentally moving. He had a very real impact on millions of regular people across decades and profoundly influenced artists as diverse as Thoreau, Hawthorne, Melville, Poe, Longfellow, and Whitman. His impact is indeed so titanic that most of these and many others might not have written at all without him; at the very least, their work would have been very different - probably unrecognizable and possibly far less great, if great at all - without him. He continued to have a great effect on later writers, including Robert Frost and his namesake Ralph Waldo Ellison; his reach indeed stretches to the present and shows no sign of disappearing. A true testament to his influence is the fact that several of these writers profoundly disagreed with him, much of their work essentially being a rebuttal; agree with him or not, his stature is such that one must deal with him. The aspect opponents have most often objected to is his relentless optimism, which is really the main obstacle to reading him. His philosophy survived the Civil War - was indeed a far from negligible force in creating and sustaining union spirit -, but the twentieth century's numerous atrocities can easily make him seem so naïve as to be hopelessly outdated. The truth is very much otherwise. Emerson is never more needed than in trying times; it is not hyperbolic to say the world would be a far more peaceful and better place if the hard common sense at his writings' core were taken to heart. Everyone should read him because he helps us find the best in ourselves, appealing to humanity's best instincts to make a better future for both individuals and society.

This, Emerson's first essay collection, has twelve of his writings, including some of the best and most famous: "History," "Self-Reliance," "Compensation," "Spiritual Laws," "Love," "Friendship," "Prudence," "Heroism," "The Over-Soul," "Circles," "Intellect," and "Art." They were painstakingly pieced together from numerous and various lectures and journals, and though this sometimes gives a sort of choppy effect, it is clear that the labor paid off. Emerson is highly persuasive; his rhetoric is mesmerizingly engaging, his style unique and memorable. One of his main strengths is that he is as satisfying aesthetically as intellectually; he often works himself up to a near-lyrical rapture, and his prose is about as poetic as possible.

I will briefly discuss some of my favorites essays, but all are of very high and, indeed, nearly consistent quality. "Self-Reliance" is Emerson's most famous essay and is rivaled only by "Concord Hymn" as his most famous work. It is also his masterpiece; one often hears - sometimes disparagingly - that Emerson tried to fit his whole philosophy into each essay, and this comes remarkably close. There is far more depth and subtlety here than the length suggests; one would be very hard-pressed to find another work so densely packed. The words are few, but the implications are enough for a lifetime. "Self" is a seminal masterwork; a founding Transcendentalist text and American Romantic cornerstone, it is central to American thought, culture, and literature. Anyone even remotely interested in any Americana aspect must be intimately familiar with it; aside from the Declaration of Independence and Constitution themselves, perhaps no other document is so vital to the American spirit.

Reading "Self" is perhaps more necessary than ever - not only because it is eternally relevant but also because it is often misrepresented. The term "self-reliance" is now almost entirely political, almost synonymous with libertarianism, and the essay is frequently touted along such lines. However, these things are hardly more than implied here, and though the definition of "liberal" has greatly changed, it is important to remember that Emerson was one of his era's leading liberals. His prime meaning in any case is self-reliance intellectually and in everyday life. He urges us to trust ourselves, to recognize human divinity and avoid imitation. It is a simple message but all-important - and far easier said than done. Emerson explores all its ramifications - philosophical, practical, social, political, economic, etc. - and outlines all its benefits. The case is beyond convincing, but he can do no more than show us; the rest is up to us.

This profoundly individualist message is another reason that reading "Self" is so necessary. We must open our minds to him, and once we have, they will never be closed again. Though greatly revered with many and diverse followers, Emerson's intention was not to be loved but to inspire; he wanted all to find individual genius. His work is thus the truest and best kind of self-help manual, and "Self" is its apotheosis. It has inspired millions in the more than century and a half of its existence, including me. I have read thousands and thousands of works, but this is one of the handful that truly changed my life. Emerson's greatness always shines through, but reading him at the right time can make an astonishing difference. He was more popular in life with the young than the old, and I can easily see why. I was lucky to read him at just the right time, and "Self" spoke to me more powerfully than almost anything else ever has. Without hyperbole, I can say that I would not be doing what I am today and would have abandoned my goals and visions without reading "Self" and Thoreau's "Life without Principle" - a somewhat similar essay highly influenced by Emerson - when I did. I was wracked with self-doubt and getting nothing but indifference, bafflement, or hostility from others; these works gave just the kick I needed, and I will never look back. "Self" has the potential to be life-changing as almost nothing else does, and I highly recommend it to all; you can hardly be unaffected and may never be the same. However, I especially recommend it to the young; its importance to them - and Emerson's generally - simply cannot be overemphasized.

Emerson is a signature American stylist, and "Self" is near his height. An Emerson-loving professor of mine once joked that no one can find the topic sentence in an Emerson paragraph, and his transitions also frequently leave much to be desired. However, "Self" is near-seamless, a true masterpiece of style that flows smoothly and often waxes beautiful. This is all the more remarkable in that it was assembled even more than usual from disparate sources; entries that ended up here came as far as eight years apart, but the whole is admirably harmonious.

"Self" is a preeminent example of how Emerson delights in paradox. Anyone who reads him closely sees that he is as complex as he is simple. Thus, despite - or perhaps even because of - apparent straight-forwardness, few texts are more ripe for deconstruction. "Self" fans after all love a text that tells us not to love texts, are inspired by a man who tells us not to be inspired by men, and are convinced by a text and man both of which tell us not to be convinced by either. But this is only the beginning. "Self" works because it tells us exactly what we want to hear and, in striking contrast to innumerable self-help books, does so in an intellectually and even aesthetically respectable way. This is fine for me and (hopefully) you but could of course be taken to heart by Hitler as easily as Gandhi. The thoroughly optimistic, mild-mannered, and physically frail Emerson may not have foreseen his revolutionary text being put to nefarious use and probably would have been unable to believe in even the possibility. However, the danger, if we choose to call it so, is very real. "Self" could easily have had the same effect that Nietzsche had on Nazis, and that it has not been taken up by anarchists, radical terrorists, and the like is perhaps mere luck. One at least wonders how it avoided preceding The Catcher in the Rye as the work synonymous with unsavory people. That said, it is likely unfair to Emerson to say he did not anticipate this; he after all takes his views to the logical conclusion. He surely saw it, and it may have given pause, but he persevered because he was faithful to his intuition just as he urges us to be to ours. He truly believed in self-reliance and was ready to stand by it no matter what befell - nay, thought it his only choice. His optimism must have told him that the doctrine would not be abused, and he has been right - so far. Only time will tell if this continues to hold, but "Self" remains essential for all.

"Compensation" is one of the most representative essays. The staunch optimism so essential to his thought was perhaps never shown so clearly or thoroughly elsewhere. Emerson begins by saying he had wanted to write about compensation since he was a boy, and it shows in his enthusiasm. The essay details Emerson's belief that everything balances out, even if we cannot see it, and that good and evil have their own earthly rewards despite appearances. He may not convince cynics, but his argument is certainly compelling, and his critiques of conventional Christianity and other traditions are very intriguing.

"Spiritual Laws" details and refines some of his most important concepts. They are put forth more vividly elsewhere, but fans and scholars will appreciate this delineation. It deals specifically with Emerson's belief that the same spiritual laws inhabit all people, underscoring his emphasis on self-reliance and human divinity. He teaches us to rely on our own minds rather than being intimidated by ostensibly higher ones because all are in a sense part of a universal intellect.

"Love" and "Friendship" are particularly important for disproving the common claim that Emerson focused on the intellect to the exclusion of the emotions; after all, what could be more fundamentally and profoundly emotional than love and friendship? Love may be the most written about subject of all, and friendship is high on the list, but Emerson is as startlingly original as ever. His love analysis is particularly vivid; I have read countless works about love - who has not? -, but his is one of the most memorable. He examines it from virtually every aspect - everything from its metaphysical and theological senses to a full history of its everyday existence. This last goes from first love to love among the aged, and the insight is great. Emerson notes the immense changes that inevitably take place on this path, but unlike nearly everyone else, does not lament fiery love's demise in youth. His characteristic optimism shines through, as he not only says that aging love has compensations but even that it is actually higher; Emerson's chart is indeed a progression. This is perhaps his most emotional essay, apt to move even those who normally find him cold and aloof. "Friendship" is also very good - not as affecting but more thought-provoking. Emerson's view is unsurprisingly original and engaging. He believes that friendship can exist only with real equality and sees it as a sort of springboard to something higher. His demands are great, and the work is eye-opening in the sense that almost no one has a friend by his definition. Like his best work, "Friendship" can easily make us question beliefs and preconceptions - and perhaps even make us better friends.

"The Over-Soul" is one of Emerson's most important essays. The over-soul concept is central to his thought and present in nearly all his work, but he explicitly defines and details it only here. Simply put, it is a unity underlying all humanity - a universal soul of which all people are a part. The idea was heavily influenced by Eastern religion, showing just how far Emerson had drifted from his Unitarian upbringing and early minister career. Everyone knows that Emerson was a transcendentalist, but a satisfying definition of the term is very hard to define. This essay is a good start, as the over-soul is the prime transcendence agent, letting us escape the body's prison and daily life's dullness to achieve universal unity. As elsewhere, Emerson's real point is human divinity; the fact that all are part of the over-soul would set us free if we but knew it. His core self-reliance doctrine also comes to the fore as he urges us to cease self-doubt and comparisons with others to embrace universal divinity. All this doubtless sounds highfalutin, pretentious, or at least hopelessly obscure, but that is my second-hand relaying; Emerson is clear, concise, and articulate.

"Circles" is a sort of corollary to "Compensation." This goes further by boldly claiming that everything can be outdone. Emerson's characteristic optimism comes to the fore, and he works himself up to a rhapsody, drawing a vibrant vision of perpetual improvement. Yet this is no mindless optimism. Emerson was well ahead of his time philosophically, specifically anticipating Nietzsche and existentialism, though he rarely gets credit. For example, "Circles" goes as far as saying there are no final or eternal truths because a new one can always be made. Emerson of course had advancement in mind, but there was a subtler side to his thinking that comes out here as it rarely did. Even more than most of his work, this truly requires close reading, and those who pay attention will be amply rewarded.

There is much to be said for reading the essays as first published, but many are widely available in anthologies alongside others of comparable greatness. This is a great way to get a substantial number in one place, but some will want more comprehensiveness. The important thing in any event is to read them in some form.

Essays, First Series Overview

Title: Essays, First Series

Author: Ralph Waldo Emerson

HISTORY.

There is no great and no small
To the Soul that maketh all:
And where it cometh, all things are
And it cometh everywhere.

I am owner of the sphere,
Of the seven stars and the solar year,
Of Caesar's hand, and Plato's brain,
Of Lord Christ's heart, and Shakspeare's strain.

I.
HISTORY.

THERE is one mind common to all individual men. Every
man is an inlet to the same and to all of the same. He
that is once admitted to the right of reason is made a
freeman of the whole estate. What Plato has thought,
he may think; what a saint has felt, he may feel; what
at any time has befallen any man, he can understand.
Who hath access to this universal mind is a party to
all that is or can be done, for this is the only and
sovereign agent.

Of the works of this mind history is the record. Its
genius is illustrated by the entire series of days.
Man is explicable by nothing less than all his
history. Without hurry, without rest, the human spirit
goes forth from the beginning to embody every faculty,
every thought, every emotion, which belongs to it, in
appropriate events. But the thought is always prior to
the fact; all the facts of history preexist in the
mind as laws. Each law in turn is made by circumstances
predominant, and the limits of nature give power to but
one at a time. A man is the whole encyclopaedia of facts.
The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn, and
Egypt, Greece, Rome, Gaul, Britain, America, lie folded
already in the first man. Epoch after epoch, camp,
kingdom, empire, republic, democracy, are merely the
application of his manifold spirit to the manifold world.

This human mind wrote history, and this must read it.
The Sphinx must solve her own riddle. If the whole of
history is in one man, it is all to be explained from
individual experience. There is a relation between the
hours of our life and the centuries of time. As the
air I breathe is drawn from the great repositories of
nature, as the light on my book is yielded by a star a
hundred millions of miles distant, as the poise of my
body depends on the equilibrium of centrifugal and
centripetal forces, so the hours should be instructed
by the ages and the ages explained by the hours. Of
the universal mind each individual man is one more
incarnation. All its properties consist in him. Each
new fact in his private experience flashes a light on
what great bodies of men have done, and the crises of
his life refer to national crises. Every revolution
was first a thought in one man's mind, and when the
same thought occurs to another man, it is the key to
that era. Every reform was once a private opinion, and
when it shall be a private opinion again it will solve
the problem of the age. The fact narrated must correspond
to something in me to be credible or intelligible. We, as
we read, must become Greeks, Romans, Turks, priest and
king, martyr and executioner; must fasten these images
to some reality in our secret experience, or we shall
learn nothing rightly. What befell Asdrubal or Caesar
Borgia is as much an illustration of the mind's powers
and depravations as what has befallen us. Each new law
and political movement has meaning for you. Stand before
each of its tablets and say, 'Under this mask did my
Proteus nature hide itself.' This remedies the defect
of our too great nearness to ourselves. This throws our
actions into perspective; and as crabs, goats, scorpions,
the balance and the waterpot lose their meanness when
hung as signs in the zodiac, so I can see my own vices
without heat in the distant persons of Solomon, Alcibiades,
and Catiline.

It is the universal nature which gives worth to
particular men and things. Human life, as containing
this, is mysterious and inviolable, and we hedge it
round with penalties and laws. All laws derive hence
their ultimate reason; all express more or less
distinctly some command of this supreme, illimitable
essence.

Flair: Exquisite Invitations, Lush Flowers, and Gorgeous Table Settings Review

I admire Joe Nye's sense of style and risque ventures with color. He proffers wonderful, useful, practical advice that can be applied to a range of budgets. Joe and I share a love of using carnations and alstroemeria in arrangements for home entertaining. I was particularly taken with his apparent affection for shades of pink, yellow, and blue! Even if one cannot afford to employ a calligrapher, one can certainly apply the principals Mr. Nye suggests to create a similar effect. (I love it that he suggested having a calligrapher to create a "master copy" that can then be duplicated! I'm a firm believer in that when I'm pinching pennies!) Overall, an excellent read, and the photos are magnificent!

Four-Season Harvest: Organic Vegetables from Your Home Garden All Year Long Review

Four-Season Harvest: Organic Vegetables from Your Home Garden All Year Long Overview

If you love the joys of eating home-garden vegetables but always thought those joys had to stop at the end of summer, this book is for you. Eliot Coleman introduces the surprising fact that most of the United States has more winter sunshine than the south of France. He shows how North American gardeners can successfully use that sun to raise a wide variety of traditional winter vegetables in backyard cold frames and plastic covered tunnel greenhouses without supplementary heat. Coleman expands upon his own experiences with new ideas learned on a winter-vegetable pilgrimage across the ocean to the acknowledged kingdom of vegetable cuisine, the southern part of France, which lies on the 44th parallel, the same latitude as his farm in Maine.
This story of sunshine, weather patterns, old limitations and expectations, and new realities is delightfully innovative in the best gardening tradition. Four-Season Harvest will have you feasting on fresh produce from your garden all through the winter.

Check Out The Preschooler's Busy Book

The Preschooler's Busy Book Review

My son loves this book (as do I)! I am a stay-at-home mom, so we need to stay busy or I'll go crazy! We are able to pick this book up and quickly pick out an activity to do. The materials are basic materials that are easy enough to have on hand. We love arts and crafts, so I don't ever find us short of the necessary supplies. The age range on the book is very accurate. My 4 (almost 5) yo loves these activities.

The Preschooler's Busy Book Overview

The Preschooler’s Busy Book contains 365 fun, creative activities to stimulate your preschooler every day of the year! It also shows parents and daycare providers how to: save money by making paints, play dough, clays, glue, paste, and other arts and crafts supplies; prevent boredom during even the longest stretches of inclement weather with ideas for indoor play, kitchen activities, and arts and crafts projects; stimulate a child’s natural curiosity with fun reading, math, and science activities; encourage a child’s physical, mental, and emotional growth with ideas for music, dance, drama, and outdoor play; celebrate holidays and special occasions with projects and activities; and keep children occupied during long trips or cross-town errands. Disappointing - Christine - Austin, TX
I bought this book with the hopes of finding some quick and easy activities to keep my 3-year old occupied for longer bits of time. I have to admit, some of the activities in the book are perfect -- simple, engaging, without much prep. But about half of them are ridiculous. Either because they require too much prep time for a quick engagement or because they are simply ridiculous (almost obvious page fillers). About half of the activities are worth having printed. But then they could be organized better. In the book, they're organized topically (the "math" games are together, etc.). It would be better if they were organized more how one would use them. Categories like: quick prep, kitchen games, car games, etc. would be more helpful. Also, as a working mom who also wants to get creative with her kid, I found the book a bit offensive in that the prose was EXPLICITLY targeted for stay at home moms. There is simply no reason for this to be the case. It could just as easily be targeted for parents (moms AND dads, folks), and there's no reason for all of the language about staying home with your kids. Take for example the activity that asks you to guide your child in telling you all of the things he or she loves about dad, writing them down on a piece of paper, letting her decorate it, and then putting it in dad's lunch that he takes to work the next day. C'mon. This activity could just as easily have been written as "ask your child to pick an important person in his or her life (mom, dad, grandparent, neighbor, etc.) and write down all of the things she loves about that person. Have your child decorate the paper, and then the next time you see that person, have your child present the drawing as a gift.

Teaming with Microbes: The Organic Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web, Revised Edition Review

I've read too many books on composting. I've studied biodynamics, permaculture, organic - trying to find a coherent system that makes sense to me. Seems like lots of things work, from lasagna gardening to double-digging - in some places. But not others. Compost happens: But not always.

Starting out fresh on a new-to-me 10 acre farm this year, I've been struggling to find a coherent approach that minimizes the years of experimentation typically recommended. Confronted with sandy loam, I expected to be adding - literally - tons of compost and lime per acre over the next few years. My back and my purse are grateful to "Teaming with Microbes" for showing me that there are better/cheaper ways that are equally/more effective. I still will need compost and lime - but I don't expect to need tons of each now. Instead, I'm investing some of that money in a compost tea brewer - it's much easier to spray on compost tea than it is to spread tons of compost. By combining techniques I know now how to improve the texture of my soil (hint, simply tilling in cover crops isn't enough, esp. if your soil is already depleted.)

This book pulls it all together by explaining fundamental soil science - thus incidentally explaining why millions of "wacky" claims about rehabilitation of soil have proven effective through the years.

It's excellent, it's straight-forward and easy, and when you finish you'll have no doubts left about the most efficient way to proceed with your project. As for me, reading about all of those hungry microbes left me hungry for more information and I've gone on to the source - Dr. Elaine Ingham. She has some amazing (and readable) books and CDs out there that will really knock your socks off.

And you'll never waste a nutrient again. (I even rinsed my molasses bottle and used the water for my shrubs. Potent nutrients!)

Teaming with Microbes: The Organic Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web, Revised Edition Overview

Smart gardeners know that soil is anything but an inert substance. Healthy soil is teeming with life — not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. When we use chemical fertilizers, we injure the microbial life that sustains healthy plants, and thus become increasingly dependent on an arsenal of artificial substances, many of them toxic to humans as well as other forms of life. But there is an alternative to this vicious circle: to garden in a way that strengthens, rather than destroys, the soil food web — the complex world of soil-dwelling organisms whose interactions create a nurturing environment for plants. By eschewing jargon and overly technical language, the authors make the benefits of cultivating the soil food web available to a wide audience, from devotees of organic gardening techniques to weekend gardeners who simply want to grow healthy, vigorous plants without resorting to chemicals.

I have a few other more academic tomes on this subject, but I recalled Jeff Lowenfels's name from my time at several gardening mags in the 1980s (House Plants & Porch Gardens [long defunct] and Organic Gardening), and Art was enthusiastic, so it looked like a good bet. It's a good introduction to what we know about soil life and fertility, written in accessible language for normal people, and it's chockful of color photomicrographs of the little critters. Published by Timber Press, a high-quality outfit. Go for it.

A Place of My Own: The Architecture of Daydreams Review

You're either a Pollan fan or you're not, and for Pollan fans, this book is every bit as fun and informative (tho on a much smaller scale) as Omnivore's Dilemma. If you're into purely linear thought, don't read it. Pollan thinks in spokes -- lots of linear lines shooting out all over the place but never scattershot and always tied together around the edge with an articulate, interesting philosophy. You have to be willing to go with the flow, but he is always entertaining and always a thought ahead of himself. For the time I'm reading it, I want to build a hut even though I have no woods, no pond, and no real desire to sit/work inside one. I'm reading the last part of the book slowly now, reluctant to finish and have to put it away, but willing to because that will let me go on to the next Pollan inspiration.

A Place of My Own: The Architecture of Daydreams Overview

Michael Pollan's unmatched ability to draw lines of connection between our everyday experiences- whether eating, gardening, or building-and the natural world has been the basis for the popular success of his many works of nonfiction, including the genre-defining bestsellers The Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food. With this updated edition of his earlier book A Place of My Own, readers can revisit the inspired, intelligent, and often hilarious story of Pollan's realization of a room of his own-a small, wooden hut, his "shelter for daydreams"-built with his admittedly unhandy hands. Inspired by both Thoreau and Mr. Blandings, A Place of My Own not only works to convey the history and meaning of all human building, it also marks the connections between our bodies, our minds, and the natural world.

Left Unfinished - C. J. Thompson - Pond Inlet, Nunavut Canada
I bought and read Pollan's 'The Omnivores's Dilemma' and thoroughly enjoyed every page.... I bought two more of his books, expecting the same great read, and (at least as far as this book is concerned) was VERY disappointed.

The title of this book suggests one person's homesteading adventure and it is quite a let down to discover that it is lttle more than an account of Pollan's building of a shed. Ostensibly it is a philisophical treatise whose discussions and conclusions arise from the creative process involved in the construction process but, somehow, I couldn't identify with anything he was saying.

I gave this book a chance ... I got about a third of the way into it ... but I ultimately found it tedious and uninteresting.

Amigurumi World: Seriously Cute Crochet Review

I would definitely say that this is the best amigurumi book out there! I have looked through many amigurumi books, but this one has the cutest dolls. I have both this one and amigurumi world two and I love them both. I would recommend not purchasing the amigurumi world two book if you don't have a baby, because although it does include cute little dolls similar to this one, most of the dolls and toys (as you may have guessed from the title) are for babies. Anyways, the patterns on this book are very easy and perfect for beginners. I, actually, didn't know how to crochet until I saw this book and was determined to learn. The pictures that are provided are helpful enough for someone who is slightly experienced in crocheting to learn new stiches, but not for those who don't know at all, like I didn't. I used youtube to help me learn. By simply searching "crochet amigurumi tutorial" or "single crochet in the round" on youtube, you will find enough videos to help a beginner start a project.

Worth buying, but somewhat disappointing - The Love Zombie - New York, USA
I bought this book after reading all the rave reviews and decided to give it a go. I was really excited to get it and immediately tried out the Tiny Ami pattern. I was very disappointed--I followed the pattern exactly for the head and it came out egg-shaped, not nice and round like the pictures. I was also a little disappointed that not all the patterns had the same "alien headed" aesthetic that the Tiny Ami or Lion patterns had, but that's simply a matter of taste and had no effects on my rating of the book.

Overall, its a pretty nice book, (the mommy/daddy and baby sets are a nice touch) and I think worth getting. As of yet I haven't tried any other patterns (I've only had the book for a few days), so I don't know if there are problems elsewhere in the book, but the above mentioned eggheadedness issue makes me a bit wary.

I have had issues with shipping from Amazon in the past, taking weeks for delivery. Not this time, I had my book with in days of ordering and I was making the little guys out of this book that night.

The book itself is easy to follow and the Amigurumi are "Seriously Cute", I have several other books and they are harder to follow, yet this book was easy and fun to work with.

Amigurumi World - A. Satyagraha - Jakarta, Indonesia
This book is very easy to follow with some very cute animals to make for my kids...very recommended especially for beginners like me!

Complete Price Guide to Watches No. 30 Review

The book was helpful in determining the rarity of certain old watches. Prices on ebay seem a bit higher than what this book indicates, so if someone is trying to find the actual value of a watch, they may be a little disappointed. This book is a good reference for watch collectors.

I bought this to locate a Gruen watch but I couldn't find it in this book.
Also it doesn't list any low price watches such as Timex, Seiko, etc.

The Arrl Extra Class License Manual (Arrl Extra Class License Manual for the Radio Amateur) Review

The steps to upgrade to Amateur Extra class license are achievable and worth the time investment. If you want to take the exam with confidence, then using this well-written book as your study guide will help do that.

First, some info about the Element 4 exam to upgrade from General to Extra class. The exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions that are selected from the officially released pool (effectivity July 2008) of over 738 questions (with answer key). At least 37 questions must be answered correctly to pass. The exam is administered by a team of volunteer examiners who are themselves Amateur Extra Class radio operators.

So, what makes this book the study guide to own?

The chapters are organized by topics that align with the sub-elements in the exam and provide the much needed technical context and background for all the questions. At this licensing level, the numerous schematics, diagrams and plots help significantly with the learning. Learning the technical topics for Amateur Extra requires much more math skills, electronics background and technical RF knowledge than General class. Nearly 3/4 of the study guide is devoted to this technical context and background material that promotes understanding and minimizes memorization.

The last 1/4 of this study guide lists the entire Element 4 question pool of 738 questions, also organized by sub-element. I was able to work off each chapter and its related questions one sub-element at a time during my spare time over the course of about six weeks.

This is the book (previous edition) I used to study and pass the Amateur Extra Class license exam. I didn't need to use any other books, CDs, or online practice quizzes. As such, I definitely recommend this study guide.

License Manual, Amatuer Extra Class - BB - Mississippi
Excellent manual for study for the Amateur Extra class ham radio license. It is very technical and is written for the ham radio operator that has passed his General class license and wants to advance him or herself to the next license and its operating privileges. I would highly recommend this study manual.

Adequate, but not Great - JD Norris - Atlanta Metro
As has already been stated by others, this book tries to do the near impossible. It makes assumptions as to your proficiency in electronics and math. I successfully used this book to attain an Amateur Extra license. I would read the entire book ONE time, then mark all of the correct answers in the question pool. Read, re-read, and then read the questions OVER AND OVER until you are able to average 80% proficiency on the QRZ practice tests. It can be done! 73

very helpful....... but - F. Jackson - USA

This is probably the best study guide you can find. I gave four stars instead of five
because I thought the explanation to some of the math problems could have been
a little more clear. To understand the math I used a book called "Circuit Concepts" by
Thomas Kubala. I wanted to learn the material and not just memorize, and the ARRL manual
was really a great help. I passed on the first try with a 96%.

Beware however, unless you have a background in radio you're probably going to have to
put in some time if you want to do well on the exam. I studied at least one or two hours a day for
several weeks. I also used several of the practice exams and paid close attention to the
answers I got wrong. If you're prepared, then the exam isn't really too difficult, but you have
to know the material. Good Luck!
