The Secret Life of Plants takes Plant Spirit shamanic understanding to an entirely new level. I am beyond impressed with this read. Don't say that lightly. If you've ever felt drawn to Plants or the woods, this book will explain why and what that pull is on a subconscious level. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to expand their perception of nature's wisdom and energy as a whole.

What a waste of money! - kayqueue - Virginia, USA
They had to be joking when they wrote this book. The first chapter pretends to prove plants have ESP because the needle jumps when plants are attached to lie detector machines. Then guesses are made as to what the moving needle means, such as "plants are sentient beings, plants have emotions, and plants can read minds." Give me a break! A lie detector measures electricity; electricity is produced as cells goes about the business of living. The authors top this off by informing us that the "scientist" performing these experiments offered his studies to the world for testing and replication -- in The International Journal of Parapsychology. Enough said!

Appauled that this is "required" reading for my Herb course - Daryl W. Mccullough - Northern PA
This book is bad. It has small nuggets of truth here and there, mixed with a whole bunch of crap. It's a throwback to the 60's new age crowd who thrives on nature worship. I love plants, don't get me wrong, but I'm not going to pretend my plant can "talk" to me or feel scared that I'm about to eat it. Don't waste the money. Get a herb book from a reputable herbalist or botanist.

Secret life of plants: an interesting read. - Rion Carter - Provo, UT USA
I thought the book was interesting enough to buy, which doesn't happen to me very often.

Whether you agree with the theories or not doesn't really matter... it's the possibilities that are very interesting. I enjoyed reading the book, but that doesn't mean I agree with every statement in it. I think it's very thought provoking, and definitely worth a buy.

Fastastic Book - M. Gillespie - Chicago, IL
This eye-opening book tells the amazing stories of numerous scientists who revealed aspects of plants that the average person would never think possible. You will never look at a plant the same way again!

The Polymer Clay Techniques Book Review

I've never used polymer clay before, so I was looking for a book with easy-to-read directions for basic techniques. This profusely illustrated reference blew the doors off my expectations. It shows clear, step by step directions for more techniqes than I knew to ask for, as well as helpful hints for all the more obvious-seeming manipulations. Different techniques require different tools, so you can start with just a few basic ones and add more gadgets as you broaden out into more ways of using the material. Of course you can always improvise instead of using store-bought tools, and this offer plenty of suggestions along those lines, too.

The best way to start any craft is with a patient mentor. Lacking that, this book looks like the next best way to get started with polymer clay.

The Polymer Clay Techniques Book Overview

You can achieve great results with polymer clay! With the 50+ techniques in this book, you can create polymer clay buttons or boxes or anything in between. Starting with the very basics (such as rolling, baking and gluing), Sue then moves on to more advanced methods: marbling, texturing, millefiori, bead-making, faux-stone effects and more. Feature spreads show exciting ways to combine techniques. You'll find this a comprehensive guide to the medium, complete with everything from a listing of necessary tools and materials to inspiring examples of polymer clay art.

The Polymer Clay Techniques Book Specifications

It's hard to imagine a material more versatile than polymer clay. What other medium yields perfectly convincing simulations of everything from marble, wood, ivory, and jade to metal, porcelain, mosaic, enamel, and semiprecious stones--not to mention flowers, food, and sculptural forms? With a thoroughness rarely found in other books on the subject, Sue Heaser explains all of these methods and more, supplementing her excellent instructions with good, clear photos. Although she includes a number of full step-by-step projects, this is primarily a techniques-driven presentation. Beginning with the preliminaries of materials, preparation, color mixing, baking, and other basics, Heaser then moves on to clay manipulation (beads, millefiori, molds, vessels, frames, flowers), sculpting (simple animals, faces, armatured figures), embellished treatments (stamping, painting, metallic effects, image transfers), and simulations (stones, antique effects, wood, miniatures). Chapter-opening spreads showcase exquisite works by a variety of polymer clay artists, and a helpful appendix compares the handling properties of all the leading polymer clay brands. Beginners will most likely be more comfortable with a more project-oriented approach, but anyone already bitten by the polymer clay bug will find this an essential idea book. --Amy Handy

Good overview of what can be done with Polymer clay - Brad of Naples - Naples, FL
This book is an excellent overview of what can be done with polymer clay. It has lots of ideas and shows a few techniques from the 5000 ft. level. It was my "gateway" into polymer clay. As my interests with clay evolve, I have invested in books that are more specific to my interest (it's a very versatile material) but this is an excellent starter book.

One of the Best! - Mel White - Southern California
This book is one of the best books ever on polymer clay! I have been a clayer for three years, and have taken a lot of classes and read a lot of books and have come up with some fun techniques on my own... but I still refer to this book frequently (to remind myself of some technique or review a new one I'm lerning or simply for inspriation and/or to get my creative juices flowing). For new clayers or old pros, there is a lot to be learned from this book!

All About Creating Japanese Gardens (Ortho's All About Gardening) Review

If you are looking for a coffee table book with marvelous photos, you should look elsewhere. But if you want to understand principles and techniques for creating a Japanese garden (or any beautiful landscape,) this book is for you. A few terrific tips: To make your yard look bigger, start with a wide path and make it taper toward the end. It will make the path look longer. Plant larger, well defined plants in the foreground and smaller, fuzzier plants in the background. It will look like a photo where the background is receding and give you an added feeling of depth. To make stepping stones, dig holes and pour concrete right in the ground. After a few hours, play with the texture. Make winding paths with little surprises at every turn that you cannot see from afar. The surprise can be a water feature, a blooming shrub, a statue, you name it. There are many many tips like these on every page in addition to fascinating information on the history and culture of Japanese gardens through the ages.

Build Your Japanese Garden and spent your free time golfing - Elijah Li - California
I bought serveral books about creating Japanese gardens. This book by far the best one that I had. I built a Japanese style Rock Garden so I don't have to mow my lawn. My back yard is built based on some of the pictures and tips I read from this book. The fun part is that you put in your hard work and built the garden you wanted which pays off when your guests give you thumb up. I spent about 00 on the materials and hours of my own labor on the project. Now I can spent my weekend golfing instead of mowing my lawn. Ouch! My back still hurting from all the hardwork.

Check Out Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades: The Complete Guide to Organic Gardening for $13.19

Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades: The Complete Guide to Organic Gardening Review

I'm a complete beginner to gardening (even in containers) and decided to start a small vegetable garden this year. I picked up this book based on Amazon reviews and got some other beginner gardening books from the library to supplement my learning. Even though the author says that it's not a comprehensive gardening book, I found myself referring to it much more than the other books I got. He has a down-to-earth, scientific, thoughtful writing style that gained my trust through his explanations of his gardening methods and experiences.

Some points I found invaluable as a beginner:

1. Importance of fertilizing - basically, soil quality is poor all over the PNW because of constant rain, so fertilizing (without adding too much compost) is crucial.
2. Not over-watering, which lowers soil temperature and leeches nutrients.
3. Approximate sowing dates for various vegetables.
4. Buying quality seeds - the home gardener often gets sold the cheapest quality seeds, which can affect your entire harvest (and all the time, money, energy you've spent on it). It's important to buy from catalogs that test their seeds and insist on commercial quality.
5. And of course, the list of vegetables and how to raise them, how well they adapt to our climate, etc.

Especially benefits those who live in the Pac. NW. But contains many opinions (and "advice" contradictory to reliable sources) - xfrozenfirex - Sammamish, WA USA
CAVEAT: I have only read up to the third chapter so far

This book is written purely from the experience of the author (who is quite successful, I'm sure), but I was looking for a book that was more objective and grounded in concrete data. However, much of the advice is good and I've only found some places where the author makes it sound as if the information he is giving is definitely right (and all others are wrong, or doesn't acknowledge that there exist alternatives), but my research has shown some controversies or contradicting information in that area.

The strongest point of this book is that it is locale-specific (focus is on the Pacific Northwest, mainly Oregon). Consequently, much of the good advice I'm talking about above are the neat tricks and techniques that actually work well in that climate.

Overall a good book, but I think it would be wise to do a bit of your own research while reading this book.

Happy - -
I moved to the NW from New England and needed some gardening help! This is very helpful and detailed. Would reccommend!!

excellent resource for the Pacific Northwest gardner - Tami L. Skelton - Seattle, WA USA
I'm a new gardner, having just bought a weekend home with some acreage. After doing a bit of research I realized that gardening in the Pacific Northwest has some specific requirements and pitfalls. This book addresses all of them. The only thing stopping me from giving it a 5 star review is the fact that it's a bit wordy for what should be a technical guide. It certainly keeps it from being dry, but I found myself wanting a more straight-forward style, such as bulleted list. Instead, this is written in more of a novel-like way with observations and discussions heavily peppered with specific facts and recommendations. I starting reading it with highlighter in hand, which helped, but my husband was much more patient. He's used this book to start our very first garden, with very few other references.

Ashley Book of Knots Review

I'm a newbie, as I've only had my copy of Ashley for 25 years, unlike the fellow who bought his in 1945. :^) But I want to echo most of what's been said.

If you're considering buying this book, how well it will fit your needs depends on what your needs are. I strongly recommend you read the 2 and 3 star reviews, as what they contain are valid comments about the book. Some of the criticisms that have been made of the book are:

* It's been in print for 60 years and hasn't been modernized.
* It was based on (mostly) natural fiber ropes. It doesn't have relevant discussion of more modern fibers.
* Some of the drawings can be hard to understand.
* The indexing could be better.

If you're reading this, you have access to a computer, so you can learn an enormous amount about knots from the web, including color pictures, verbose descriptions, and animations. It's a fantastic resource. Why, then, would anyone spend 50 bucks on a book like Ashley?

If you just want to learn some practical knots, then there are many books that will suit your needs (if you can't get what you want from the web for free). You can visit a library to take a look at different books.

Yet I still think Ashley's book belongs in my library (you'll have to make your own decision as to whether it belongs in your library). I still pick it up and get immersed in it a few times a year. It's fascinating reading and learning about all the different types of knots and other ropework.

There are some very practical things I've learned from this book. One of my favorites is #364, which explains how to tie a constrictor knot to fasten a hose to a hose fitting. I've used this many times over the last 20+ years. My wife complained about my using worm-drive hose clamps to hold on the machined brass fittings and I had to agree -- they hurt one's hand when tightening a connection. Ashley's method with the constrictor works perfectly -- so well, in fact, that I leave it on permanently. I use 1/8" braided nylon rope. I also use it to attached compressed air hose to its fittings. You should also be aware that it could be an emergency fix for e.g. a broken radiator clamp. I've even tied it in wire.

While I'm at it, I'll also pass on a comment about the knots I use. For 95% of the things I do (and my wife and kids tease me about how much I use rope and twine to do lifting, pulling, and lashing), I use the bowline, constrictor, span loop, and one and two half hitches (often the second hitch is slipped). I still use other knots, but one or more of those four are involved whenever I pick up a piece of rope.

Oh, and since I use the bowline more than the other knots, I'll pass on a relatively unknown way of tying this knot. I don't remember where I learned it (it wasn't from Ashley), but the method is #1788. I consider it extremely important, as once you learn it, you can tie it completely by feel, in the dark, the rain, or a snowstorm with ice-cold hands -- and do it in a few seconds (with practice). The key is to pull on the knot properly so that you feel it collapse into a bowline. This is such an important way of tying the knot, I think it should be taught to everyone. Yet I've never run across anyone who knew the method (except the person who taught it to me).

Ashley Book of Knots Overview

Describes every practical knot, what it looks like, where it comes from, and how to tie it. The book includes 4,000 knots, with all the varieties of shipboard knots as well as knots used by butchers, steeplejacks, electric linesmen, knitters, cobblers, surgeons, poachers and cowboys.

Ashley Book of Knots Specifications

The Ashley Book of Knots takes us back to a time when knots saved lives and put dinner on the table. Whether out at sea or in a pioneer cabin, knots were a part of daily life, one that is nearly lost today. But in this attractive, well-organized archive of more than 3,900 different knots--presented through 7,000 illustrations--the art of knot tying lives on, both as a historical reference and a reservoir of handy knowledge.

All knots - JayGee -
If there is any type of knott you are looking for, or just wanted to know about this book has it. You will know why this certain knott was used or invented. A huge amount of pictures and text on how to tie knots. An expensive book but it's a very useful book. I'd say it's the bible of all knots. A sailors, climbers, or just a recreational persons bible on how to tie knots.

Ashley Book of Knots the Bible of Knots - Brian S. Vandine - Chicago Suburbs
I already owned a good knot tying book. When I got it in my head that I really wanted to learn all kinds of decorative knot tying I did some investigation on the Internet. So many knot sites made reference to this "ABOK" and cited a number after it. I learned that ABOK referred to the Ashley Book of Knots. So, I ordered it. I understand now why this particular book is the one referenced; it really is the ultimate bible of knots! I don't mean to slight other knot tying books because with complicated knots, seeing the tying method presented differently can sometimes mean the difference between success or failure, so by all means collect other books too. It's just that the ABOK is the comprehensive reference that catalogs every knot imaginable and so should be the foundation of your knot book collection.

Recommended - Deborah S. Tower - Manchester, CT
Book given as a gift to a climber. Recipient absolutely loves the book and uses it to learn knots for use in all type of climbing situations.

It's OK - Iris Djaozandry - Canada
My problem with this book is that I always need to remember whether the dark color means right side or wrong side. Of course it is obvious in some figures, but definitely not for most of them. Why not draw flowers to illustrate the right sides on the figures?
It is confusing.

No Photos! All Black and White - Sarah Pearson - Florida, USA
I recently returned to sewing after years of being away from it. I was looking for some books to look at as a refresher as well as learn some more advanced techniques. I checked out 7 books from the library including this one and this was my least favorite. It's pretty basic, offered nothing that several of the other books didn't but primarily, because there were no photos. All the images were illustrations in gray tones. It seemed more like a text book and intimidating. Not fun and inspiring. The information was good but the lack of photos and color made it intimidating and I didn't want to read it.

Skip this one - C. Christensen -
This book is called a "classic" but I don't see why. It is a very mediocre book that skims over or altogether skips some very important sewing basics. This book is published by Fairchild, a leading publisher of professional books on fashion. So I was expecting a comprehensive, in-depth textbook on fashion sewing--I was very disappointed! There is absolutely zero info about altering store-bought patterns, so go elsewhere if you are looking for help with pattern fitting. As an example, there are just a few pages on how to hem garments. It shows a picture of a faced hem, but it gives no instructions on how to do one! Yet there are multiple pages on how to do obscure pocket flaps--it makes no sense! A much better choice would be the Reader's Digest sewing book. Even the Simplicity Simply the Best sewing book is better than this! If the book weren't so large and hefty I would send it back, but I don't want to pay the postage. The book has black and white line drawings that are no better than other books. I would only get this if I could find a really cheap copy, because otherwise you are wasting your money.

Everything you need to know to sew - Daniel M. Villanueva -
Great resource book for those who are learning to sew - big pictures and easily understood instruction.

Bought this used for my son when he adopted a puppy. It came very quickly, which was wonderful! I think he has read it cover-to-cover and he knows more about raising puppies than many people who have raised them all their lives. I'm very impressed with the outcome of the gift.

Needs better organization - L. Gaffney - New York, NY
Like a lot of other reviewers said, this book was recommended to me by a few people. After reading it, I'm not really sure why. Maybe because these "Dogs for Dummies" books are plastered all over pet stores, so a lot of people buy them. I found the book to be extremely hard to follow, with no sensible flow. Granted, there are good points in the book, and a lot of the suggestions worked, and so I'm giving this book 3 stars instead of 1 or 2. I really wish this book were organized in terms of age of the puppy. It would've been helpful to have a large chapter dedicated solely to the first two weeks. Instead, there are bits and pieces of information regarding the first few very important weeks scattered through each chapter, under different headings. There are so many references to other chapters and pages, that I now have (ironically) dog-eared pages all over the place.

That being said, I'm now going to try out "The Art of Raising a Puppy", which some friends who have raised numerous dogs (including K-9 unit service dogs) highly recommended as "the best puppy book on the market".

I love this book! The author covers tools, design and color (though I would have liked more extensive coverage of these two subjects), stringing, wirework, and beadweaving. I am mostly a beadweaver, and appreciated the tips and the step-by-step, close-up photos of beadweaving stitches. She covers ladder, brick, herringbone, peyote, and square stitches, as well as right angle weave, tubular beadwork, spiral rope, chains, and how to finish your beadwork. The layout breaks up the text into easy to read sections, with, for example, small boxes for "See Also" and "Fix It" (troubleshooting). I can see myself going back to this book repeatedly.

Great book packed with info - Julie Ann - Minnesota
Wonderful book for the novice and beyond. It covers stringing, wirework, and beading, along with an extensive "getting started" section. I love the photos, they are absolutely beautiful and plentiful with lots of close-ups throughout. The info concise and clear. I have been trying to self teach myself bead stitches, and using other books and magazines, have been unable. I think with this book, I will be successful.

I highly recommend this book. It is a great learning and reference tool. The size is a bit smaller than other books, but it is jam-packed.

Organize Now!: A Week-by-Week Guide to Simplify Your Space and Your Life Review

First off, she is not telling you anything you don't already know how to do. You've had organization ideas pop into your head all the time. But if you're like me, you have too many things to organize at once. What Berry has done is organize all these ideas in Organize Now! It is a well thought out reference book with many possible areas you have thought of to organizing. I have a large tote bag of photos I've been meaning to tackle but have been procrastinating about for years. I read the photo chapter and now have better idea where to start. It is pretty easy to follow if you want to go at it week-by-week. Each week has a check list of what to do, tips, and follow up tasks to stay organized.

Sometimes repetitive. Poorly ordered. - ArchiMark - New England
This book is organized with 52 chapters, and the idea that you could read and implement one chapter per week, and be completely organized within a year.

I felt that there were some problems with the order of the chapters. I would have liked to jump into this book and felt like I'd accomplished a tangible difference in some area of my home. But the earliest chapters in the book are about organizing your mind - with suggestions like making lists of life goals, starting a journal, buying a datebook, etc. I think that I would have accomplished more if I'd selected some chapter out of the middle of the book - like "Organize Your Linen Closet", or something along those lines, and started with that first. That would have been better for getting some momentum going.

The book focuses on organizing financial papers, photographs, recipes, music, mail, and other paperwork and small collections of items long before it gets to the big, messy spaces. I found this counter-intuitive. I would rather organized the garage, kitchen, etc. before I got too wrapped up in things that take up a more limited amount of space and are really just filing projects.

The book doesn't get to "Organize for Emergencies" until chapter 51 - though the book stresses that this is the most important thing you can do. I'd suggest skipping to this chapter early on, as it's a fairly easy one but very critical.
Most of the last 8 or 10 chapters are "special occasion" chapters, like "Organizing Your Pregnancy" and "Organize Your Holiday". It's a little depressing that the book ends with Chapter 52, "Organizing After a Loss".

Because each chapter is formatted like a 3 or 4 page checklist, the chapters tend to be a little repetitive. For every room or space you're instructed to sort things into piles: Keep, Toss, Sell or Donate, etc. The various basic storing, labeling, organizing advice is pretty similar for many different areas of the home.

There are a number of editing mistakes (incomplete sentences, misspellings, etc.) throughout the book that can be slightly annoying.

Overall I've read this whole book now over the course of some months, and am somewhat more organized than when I began, but have a long way to go, and don't think this particular book will get me the rest of the way.

Quick & simple - Carmshell -
I really like this book. It cuts to the chase so that you can get the job done. You can easily reference problems spots in the home or use the weekly program to get your whole house done. I consider it a book to keep me organized from now on.

Straightforward and simple - Megan G. Owens - Mobile, AL
I don't think getting organized could be made any easier. The author trims the fat and gives a short list of goals for each area of your life that will help you get organized without a whole lot of chatter on the topic. She also includes a list of tips for each section and also monthly, quarterly, and yearly to-do items for maintaining the organization The format and design of the book itself also lends itself to ease of use. Love this book :)

Check Out 36 HOUR DAY

36 HOUR DAY Review

When I was told that I should buy this book, the first thing that ran through my mind where do they figure I;ll find the tome to read it? (My husband also has Melanoma and with mom having the Alzheimer's time seemed to be a precious commodidy)
I broke downand bought it and found it to be a very good investment. I use it as a refererance guide than a book you would sit and read.
Every now and then I find that I have to think on medical terms and not my own language, IE: I mightuse the word pacing and you might find it under wandering,

In the book and the Alzheimer's Association will tell you that the meeting they harve are of great value to you. have yet to attend a meeting, time gets away from me and fast.

We have put a couple of things in order that has been a great help. But I can't see treating my mother like she's 3. I keep trying things til I find 1 that works. Tnis book is good at helping you there.

Also I've found writing a journal is better than writing notes. This way you know the situation that goes with question. I've even use highlighting.

The most important thing that the book and other's that have been through it will you don't be afriad to ask!!!

The other thing I've found that is helpful is have like medic #'s handy non-emergancy. They come for any reason that you may need. Also keep a list of medications and Dr.'s # for any one who may need them. Also if you need to leave town and have respitate care don't forget a local # for them to contact if needed.

RECOMMEND BOOK FOR LOVED ONES TO UNDERSTAND DEMENTA AND ALZHIEMER PATIENT"S - Linda R. Johnson - Reno,Nevada
I highly recommend this book. My sister lives in another state
and has dementia. I understand her depression and confusion now
that I read "THE 36 HOUR DAY."

36 Hour Day - Gary -
My daughter first told me about this book. My wife and I have been
caring for her now deceased father who had Alzheimers, My Mom also has it, and is in a nursing facility. The information in this book is essential for anyone either caring for a loved one that has this devasting disease, or that knows someone who is. It is informative, timely, and concise. It is easy for the layperson to read and understand. I highly recommend it!

For The Entire Family - Martin A Hogan - San Francisco, CA. (Hercules)
When our family first learned that our Mother had Alzheimer disease, we were devastated. After we all read "The 36-Hour Day", there was a great deal of relief. Although Alzhemier and other dementing illnesses can seem catastrophic, this book reads like a freindly family doctor givng you straight forward, no-nonsense advice. It covers all aspects of dealing with the family member, from explaining just what dementia is and how it can appear, to how you can deal with it appropriately without losing your patience or embarrasing your family member. Medical help, daily care, medical problems, behavior, mood, legal issues, common compassion and basic 'rules of thumb' are thoroughly covered. Several "examples" of previous family incidents are mentioned with thoughts on how to address each and every one. Great care has been crafted into this book and I highly recommend it. You will feel better, thus making the family member you are helping feel better.

Good Owners, Great Dogs Review

Because there are so many differing methods of training your dog, I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews before buying this book several years ago. The methods in it are humane and nice and extremely effective. Using primarily this book (though also The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete), my dog is now five years old and extremely well behaved. I get compliments on his obedience all the time, and I attribute all of my/his success to this book.

The advice in the book is really excellent, but even more powerful is how it will help you understand how dogs think so you can apply that knowledge to new situations. He covers a wide variety of specifics about what to do in different kinds of situations, but in life there's always something out of the ordinary that will require *you* to think about how best to handle your dog. This book has given me a very strong framework and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Great book! - Nathan A. Sweet - Seattle, WA United States
I looked at many books before purchasing this book and two others to prepare for my new puppy. This book is very thorough, covering everything from how to choose a puppy to puppyhood to adulthood. It dives into the canine mind so you better understand care and training. It teaches traditional correction training methods that are humane.

I recommend pairing this book with When Pigs Fly by Jane Killion. Good Owners, Great Dogs will give you all the basics and the traditional view on training, and When Pigs Fly will give you a different perspective on training. I feel the combination is very valuable. Do not worry if you don't have a terrier breed, When Pigs Fly applies to all dogs.

Excellent book - Ann Rugg -
This book was very helpful and informative. Almost a complete guide and excellent in combination with other books on dog training and behavior.

Phenomenal book - Susan Savelli - Richmond, Texas USA
I have owned and referred this book so many times. It is the bible of dog ownership to me. Caesar Milan has nothing on these authors. I can't think of a better book for training yourself to be a fabulous owner to your pet.

Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild (and Not So Wild) Places Review

I found this book to be very useful and am very glad I bought it. There's a lot of useful information here that i didn't expect. Every plant seems to have a story and I enjoyed everyone of them so far. There's a list of minerals and vitamins for some plants which surprised me. I had no clue dandelion leaves contained b12 and also burdock roots. I thought i could only get that from animals. There's also a list of the medicinal benefits of some plants. I haven't tried the recipes yet but I'm sure there good. Before getting into the plants there's a good intro to preparing, how to categorize identifying characteristics, medical terms, and even an outlook to keep in mind while foraging.

Being a beginner forager I thought this was a great book for me. The drawback is there's no colored pictures, but I easily just look it up on the internet. So far I've found a picture for every plant that I was looking for and there darn good pictures too. With all the plants listed this book would have probably cost a fortune to buy if it had colored photos. I don't think someone can buy this book and go out into the wild and just start foraging on the book alone. He makes it easy to know what to look for by categorizing the plants and listing them by seasons and geography. So studying and getting familiar with the plants someone wants to find first before going I believe is the best way to use the book. I've identified about 20 plants so far and am excited to identify more.

thankyou wild man

Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild (and Not So Wild) Places shows readers how to find and prepare more than five hundred different plants for nutrition and better health, including such common plants as mullein (a tea made from the leaves and flowers suppresses a cough), stinging nettle (steam the leaves and you have a tasty dish rich in iron), cattail (cooked stalks taste similar to corn and are rich in protein), and wild apricots (an infusion made with the leaves is good for stomach aches and disgestive disorders).

More than 260 detailed line drawings help readers identify a wide range of plants -- many of which are suited for cooking by following the more than thirty recipes included in this book. This book is truly the BEST! - S. Maher - East Coast
Learning about wild edibles is my lifelong hobby and I'm a huge fan of Steve Brill. I am absolutely overwhelmed with delight over his book "Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants". Out of all the wild edible books I've read, this one is truly the BEST! I was expecting the usual field guide giving the basic drone of information, but was so delighted to find his book is so much more exciting than that. It's very entertaining and in some parts very funny to read, because Steve not only includes the hard facts about the plants, but also about their place in history, folklore, medicinal purposes, instructions on how to prepare the plant to make it edible, safe and palatable plus full recipes; he also throws in some very funny stories from his personal experiences. I find that I've been able to learn much more and much faster from his book rather than any other wild edible book because all this extra interesting information sticks in my memory better. With other wild edible books, I always had a hard time remembering one plant from the next as all the basic field guide information would just eventually blend together in my memory. But with his book, I'm able to retain the information better because I can remember the stories that relate to the plants. If you were to only read one book in your life about wild edibles, then this should be the one!

Best all-around foraging book - Daniel Barwick -
I have a large shelf of foraging books, having collected and used them for some time. This one is the best I've found. Every foraging book is a compromise: comprehensiveness forfeits portability, low cost forfeits color illustrations, brevity leaves out some plants, and so on. This book is not particularly portable, but it isn't bad either. I cover it with book tape for durability. The drawings are simply the best available, bar none. Yes, there are no photos, but any beginning forager should bring a crosscheck book anyway, so this book complements any book that has photo illustrations. Most importantly, this book is focused on safety - the author knows that most people using it will be unsupervised, and he takes great pains to point out possible mis-identifications, far more thoroughly than any other foraging book I've got. I use this as my primary reference, with a photo book as a cross check, and it's perfect. It's just gravy that this is also the most enjoyable-to-read foraging book I've read. This book is clearly an extension of the author's personality, and the clarity of the book doesn't suffer just because he likes to tell stories and goof around a little. This book is not only a useful tool for identifying plants - it's also a history, biology, and culinary lesson.

What happened to the colors? - Original Settler - Eureka, MT, US
If a person wants to just read about edible and medicinal plants, this book is ok. If a person wants to look for and identify plants, this book is as useless as teats on a bull. I'm suprised that people haven't been poisoned by wrong colored plant thinking it was medicinal. Nice pencil drawings, however. Don't take this book out in the wild or in your backyard.

Mess: The Manual of Accidents and Mistakes Overview

Your whole life you've been taught to avoid making a mess: Try to keep everything under control, color inside the lines, make it perfect, and at all costs, avoid contact with things that stain.

This book asks you to do the opposite of what you have been taught. Think of it as your own personal rumpus room. A place to let loose, to trash, to spew, to do the things you are not allowed to do in the "real world." It's time to make a mess.

The only three rules you'll find in this book:
1. Do not try to make something beautiful.
2. Do not think too much. (There is no "wrong.")
3. Continue under all circumstances.

The Silver Palate Cookbook Review

I first discovered this fantastic cookbook while at a friend's house. I flipped it open and read a recipe that made my mouth water. I borrowed the cookbook from her and went home and made the dish, which still remains THE favorite family recipe. (It contains Brie cheese, tomatoes, and lots of garlic!) I have never made a recipe I didn't like from this book, and recently re-purchased it for my now grown daughter, who wanted her own copy. I always recommend this cookbook when the topic of cooking comes up. It is a book that has totally stood the test of time. Buy yourself a copy!!!

The Silver Palate Cookbook Overview

Now in its second decade, celebrate one of America's favorite cookbooks. The Silver Palate Cookbook with its 350 recipes is the widely-acclaimed contemporary classic that brought a new passion for food and hospitality into American homes. A James Beard Book Awards inductee into the cookbook Hall of Fame.

The Silver Palate Cookbook Specifications

First published in 1982, The Silver Palate Cookbook was an instant smash. It offered 350 stylish but easy recipes that reflected and helped cement America's burgeoning interest in quality cooking. It acquainted cooks with "gourmet" ingredients, just beginning to appear in our markets. And it helped many a host to shine.

The collection, whose recipes range from hors d'oeuvres to sweets, now arrives in a 25th-anniversary edition, which reproduces the original text and adds color photos throughout, often dropped into the text pages. All the old favorites, including Marinated Eggplant Livia, Chicken Marbella, Blanquette de Vaeu, and Blackberry Mousse are present, along with information about ingredients, menus, quotes, and other asides--all the things that help make the book such a pleasure. It's hard to imagine a cook--and especially one who entertains--not owning Silver Palate. This printing, which includes a retrospective foreword, offers more satisfaction still while reiterating the reasons for the book's enduring appeal. --Arthur Boehm

Amazon.com Exclusive: A Brief History of The Silver Palate Cookbook by Sheila Lukins
Twenty five years ago seems like the distant past but we still make ratatouille the same way and who would have ever dreamed that so many people would say to us, "I had Chicken Marbella at a dinner party last week and I just loved it." It took slight madness to open our little store in 1977. Florence Fabricant was writing an article on the renaissance of Columbus Avenue, where our shop was opening, we needed a name, she was on a deadline and called and said, "What are you calling your store?" We didn't know. "Why don't you call it The Silver Palate," she said. We loved it. It took sheer bravery in 1982 to write our book--who would need to buy food in our store any longer once they had all of our recipes? But that never happened for one hour. In fact, it helped us go national even further. Here we are, 25 years later, celebrating with a brand new edition of our book that finally highlights our recipes with vibrant color photographs. I once picked up the phone and someone on the other end said, "Sheila, I just baked the Decadent Chocolate Cake and my cake doesn't look like the drawing." I didn't know how to reply. I assured them the taste made up for the looks. It's bittersweet, but those problems are solved forever. While different, the color adds an exciting new dimension to the cookbook that has been a treasure to so many cooks for two and a half decades. Julee and I had a fantasy food partnership and the publication of this book has given us the opportunity to spend some wonderful time together.

Every Kichen Should Own This Book... - Karen Lindmark - The South
I've had this book many months and waited to give it a review. I wanted to be sure we tried several receipes first. The recipes we tried were all a sucess and not just with my family. The book has delicious recipes in it. I recommend it to anyone looking for a new cookbook. Give it a try, you won't be sorry.
